We love desserts around here. So when I see a yummy dessert on television, one that has all of the Today Show morning hosts yum-ing, I begin to pay attention. And then, when it’s a recipe from Martha Stewart, I’m guessing they aren’t exaggerating.
But, was I right?
This dessert was featured last week in a segment promoting Martha’s new cookbook called “Clean Slate”. I haven’t seen the cookbook yet, but it’s all about eating “clean” food as the new healthy food approach. Home cooking, fresh, unprocessed ingredients. It all sounds good to me.
This chocolate pudding was the last recipe featured on the segment and, as I said, all of the hosts were raving about it. But what’s so special about this pudding is that it uses avocado as the base, not dairy. You heard me right.
I just had to try it. Call it curiosity. Call it the recent hype regarding the health benefits of avocados, particularly in lowering bad cholesterol.
The recipe, which you can find on the Today Show site, is very simple and requires blending avocados, honey, cocoa powder and vanilla in a food processor or blender until smooth. You sprinkle a little sea salt on at the end. I added the whipped cream.
Soooooooooooo, since I know your first question, the answer is that Louisa and I thought it tasted like chocolate avocado pudding. Joe felt it was very good and didn’t detect the avocado much. I tried it again the next day with a little extra sea salt and I’m convinced that the salt serves the purpose of enhancing the chocolate flavor and disguising the avocado taste.
Louisa couldn’t finish her dessert. I think I could make it and eat it again, and enjoy it… kind of. It’s all about adjusting expectations. If you’re not expecting dairy chocolate pudding, you won’t be let down. But, in the end, if I’m just using this as a vehicle for filling my avocado quota, I think, and Louisa will agree, you may as well stick to guacamole.
